Atlassian Data Manager background
Atlassian Data Manager is a new asset management feature that is now available in Jira Service Management Cloud Premium and Enterprise. This tool enables organisations to connect to multiple data sources then cleanse and reconcile this data to ensure it is Complete, Current and Correct.
Data that has been cleansed and reconciled in Data Manager can then be imported into Assets, and used in schemas, to display across Jira via an Assets Smart Link or Assets custom field.
COMPLETE - Data Manager retrieves information from a wide variety of sources, using flat files (CSV), DB connections, and API calls from many third-party sources.
CURRENT - Data Manager ensures that your information is current by running autonomously in the background after setup. Bringing in your data, cleansing it, and reconciling it can all be automated and scheduled to run independently.
CORRECT - Data Manager normalises, de-duplicates, and consolidates data from multiple data sources to create the preferred attributes that make up a your single-source-of-truth.
Since the release in October 2024, Service Dynamics has delivered multiple successful Atlassian Data Manager projects for our clients across various industries.
What are the data import options?
There are a number of options available to ingest data into Data Manager - using a pre-built API connector, SQL or ODBC connection or even the use of a .csv file.
The Service Dynamics team have successfully assisted our customers with the development and implementation of these connections in Windows and Linux based operating systems.
What problems are solved with Data Manager?
This tool is being used by our clients to normalise data across different sources, resulting in a single reliable source of truth for asset records. This helps with the deduplication and adopting a hierarchy for data sources that the clients can trust.
There are however, common areas where our clients encounter challenges with these processes and our guidance has proven to be extremely beneficial. Some common areas of difficulty are;
- Not having a good understanding of what data they require.
- Unstructured data from multiple sources or systems
- Having incomplete or outdated data
- Sensitive data that is held in Insecure locations
The Future of Atlassian Data manager
The Atlassian Data Manager is still in Beta with a pipeline of features that are yet to be released and/or improved such as;
- Ability to pull all available attributes from the data source as currently available connectors only pull selected few data attributes.
- Ability to automate the data load from Data Manager to Assets in JSM. This work is in progress with a target to release to customer end of Q2 2025.
- Ability to automatically updates the version like how Atlassian does it for their product features in JSM
